It seems that Africa has become *THE* home of the scam.

Anyone who has an e-mail account has seen the typical "I need your help with this large chunk of money" scam. Most of those originate in Nigeria or South Africa.

There are some guys that call themselves "scambaiters." Their goal is to prank the scammers sending these letters.

I stumbled across a website a few months back and read an amazing account from a scambaiter. The story is hilarious. WARNING: it is a fairly long read. Long but worth every side-splitting minute. This scambaiter is a 43-year-old, self-employed computer engineer from Manchester, England and uses the alias Shiver Metimbers.
http://www.419eater.com/html/joe_eboh.htm

The scambaiter posts all of the exchange of e-mails including stunts that they make the scammers go through. Here is an example...

These scambaiters have even garnered the attention of the press. Here are links to several stories that cover the topic

We have been contacted by someone claiming to need pallets to go to Africa as well on several occasions.  This guy is very persistant and does not know how to take it when somone tells him no.  Not only did he contact us but one of our sister companies was contacted at the same time.  When he could not get me to say yes on the phone he started doing the internet calling.  I think I still have some emails he sent.  Here is a copy of one of them He said his name was Tyren

Hello Sarah                 I will like you to know that i have no problem with that i will like you to just make the order of the pallets you have instock like okay so as at now i will like  you to contact the shippers for the shipping cost to South Africa okay and make sure you e mail me with the total cost of the pallets right now and contact the shippers by EWshipping_co@fastermail.com to find out the shipping cost to my conpany and let me know the cost so that i will provide you with my credit card for all the charges,Thanks Tyren.
I am glad I did not try to sell them to him.  That is unbelievable that someone is trying to get rich off of us like that.  This was not the only name I was given either there was also a guy name Mike I think and he said he was in California.  I just told them the only way we could do the order was to have the money in my hand first.  They have finally quit calling after a month of telling them no.

I own a mah and pah store in Utah selling storage sheds.  I have never excepted credit cards but decide it was time to start accepting them when I recieved a Relay call for 4 storage sheds.  I recieved 2 relay calls from a Reverand .....   Then his "wife" started emailing and chatting with me about the purchases.

I started to get more and more suspiscious as I searched online chargebacks and scams.  Then I received a phone call today from the "Reverand".  He was very hard to understand and I don't believe he introduced himself as Reverand....... this time.  His english was very hard to understand.  The big red flag here to me was that Relay is for the hearing impaired so why had he used relay?  He could obviously understand me, and had no problem talking, though I could not understand his english very well.  I traced his phone number online to a land line based in Fort Walton Beach, FL.
He ended the conversation saying he wanted to buy 20 sheds and that his wife would email me.

Here are the emails that I recieved after the two relay calls and before the last phone call from FL.

I was contacted about a year ago from an Australian pallet shop wanting a number of expensive parts.  For terms, I requested wire transfer including shipping.  Much to my surprise, the transaction went through, I sent the parts and everybody was happy.  You just never know.

Hello.................and it seems that I have joined your "club", as I have just been contacted by a Reverend Mark Larry, and this scam artist wanted to buy.........90 30x40 gold metal picture frames, all fitted with non-glare glass, and packed and shipped, by HIS "favorite" shipping company.  So, now they are into picture frames......??

And, sent to Pistel & Company, Inc, 440 Airport Road Residential, Accra, Ghana.............I took enough information from him, and he finally stopped giving me any further info when I repeatedly asked for a reference, and he would not follow through.  This call came through the ATT Relay call, and the operator was as frustrated as I was at not being able to glean more facts, and no cooperation.......

I felt immediately like this had to be a scam, as no one orders $10,000.00 worth of frames, without being a little more  professional; his utmost request was "that you run the entire amount through NOW, on this credit card," so he could get the rest of his deal finalized, and he then followed up with an e-mail, with his shipper's e-mail address, and more instructions with how to get these done REAL FAST, and he needed them for his church in Ghana, his wife was having their first child, so he had to let me go RIGHT NOW, and then I should e-mail him back when these had been shipped...

Boy, if this didn't smell like  really stinky fish, nothing does.............his five credit cards were all declined, and the sixth one-yes, I kept taking them because I wanted more information, but the sixth card went through........

I called our credit card handler, who advised me to void IT IMMEDIATELY, and then she took more details from me about the cards, the caller and the address and phone number he had given, and said they would try and catch up with him, but probably couldn't do much..........

what a let-down............how can we small businesses stay safe it they won't follow up.....and I know they have thousands of these things, but I felt I did my part.....

have also contacted the Kansas Attorney General, and will tell them my story...and thanks to all of you, I was able to find this posting on line and get more information about the "Good Reverend"..

appreciate your postings,

good luck to all of you,

Having never had any real experience with scammers, I took this as a legit order. I sent an email to the 'shipping company' and received a reply to say the shipping would be £950.00 and would only be accepted thru a western union money transfer. Having never had experience with this type of payment, i made some enquiries into this type of payment with the western union people.  The email I received from the shipping company is as follows:-

He kept phoning to check the progress of the order and that is when i got suspicious. He paid for the sheds with a mastercard, which was accepted, in the amount of £2800.00. I then googled the shipping company name, but couldnt find the same email address for them. At this point, I was a little curious about the emails. I sent an email, asking for contact information in order to proceed, and this is what i got in response.

Hello Mrs Natalie   Thanks for the email response back and my contact address is North Yorkshire YO14 9QH  and contact phone number is 07024031070 and so you can give me a call at anytime and ask for Mr Benard White and we can speak over the phone and send me an email as soon as payment is made Best RegardsMr Benard White
I googled the Anthony Gilidan name, and got brought here to this forum. I then told my boss, who has subsequently phoned the bank and had the payment investigated. He phoned back to ask how they order was coming, my boss answered the phone call, and explained to him that we cannot pay for shipping, this would have to be done by himself. She was sure this would deter him, and he hung up on her.

So, beware!!!

Yeah my info wasn't private. He either got me off this board or one other board. Dont get me wrong Im not blaming the board I love the forum its just a chance you take putting info on the net, you run into weirdo's. Plus how many other people on this board was contacted by the same person, or person's that why I figured he got me from here. We are all in different states so he isnt getting us out of the yellow pages.. Maybe the Wood World there's other possiblities too. But I know he got my info from a pallet spot on the net. Like I said its a chance you take. Oh by address I meant email adress
