Mock -> Possible Scam??? (11/30/2006 1:07:11 PM)

Has anyone been contacted by a foreign speaking lady who wants to order 48x40s to ship to Africa.  She will give very little info and the language barrier is a big problem.  She wants to pay for the pallets by credit card and gives an address from Orgeon, her phone number is from California.  She is trying to get our company to set up and pay for all the shipping and wants to reinburse us.  There are too many red flags, things seem fishy. If you have any info please reply.

I have a gentlemen with a very similar request.  Pretty much the same scenario.  Feels like a scam to me!

Hattrick -> RE: Possible Scam??? (11/30/2006 5:24:02 PM)

I had a guy call me, a Rev Kelvin Pistel .  He wanted to buy 250 new softwood pallets.  He gave me a cc# to run and it was approved.  He then told me he would e-mail me info on the company that would pick up the pallets.  I was supposed to Wetsern Union the frieght money to them and Kelvin would repay me.  Arina Trading and Shipping. Googled them and found nothing.  First cantacted by email through website then they called using a TTY operater.  CC company said it was all a scam, I would have eventually been back charged for uncollectable funds.

I had a call Monday from the Reverend, I told him a wire transfer would be the only way I'd sell him pallets. Haven't heard back, now I know why

Dominion -> RE: Possible Scam??? (12/1/2006 8:24:06 AM)

We had a call from a guy wanting to send 48X40s to Africa on Monday. The guy had a forgien accent, but  said he was in New Jersey.  He gave very little info.  Eventually  I told him there was nothing we could do for him.

This string of posts has caught my interest. Industrial Reporting tries to keep on top of this kind of issue through our weekly Pallet Profile and monthly Recycle Record reports. I encourage any of the people who have posted or anyh who are considering a post to share information about this obvious scam situation to share as many details as possible. My son Chaille will attempt to run down additional details and write an analysis for our reports, very likely for the December 8 Pallet Profile.
Help us by providing the kind of information to allow us to help you.

Sincerely,
Ed Brindley, publisher

Hi Folks,

I am working on an article on this and other scams. I  need any information you can give me either on or off the record. I need more than just posts on the PalletBoard. I need to corroborate things over the phone. Please call me if you posted on this string and are willing to talk...even for just background material.

The more info that I have, the better piece that I can write. Thanks to the people who have already called in on this.

I can be reached at 800/805-0263.

Thanks,
Chaille Brindley of the PE Staff

Mock -> RE: Possible Scam??? (12/4/2006 3:44:59 PM)

We were contacted once again today same senario but a different contact person.  Once again they wanted #1s shipped to Africa.  This time it was a foreign speaking man who would give very little information and gave a fake church name.  With the second phone call, the background noise sounded very similar to a telemarketing office.  These folks are really trying to scam our industry don't fall victim. If any one has been contacted by these people call Challie and give him the information.  Also share this information with other recyclers in your area so that they won't be scamed.

P.S This proves the pallet board is a great help to our industry if only everyone would use it.

chaille -> RE: Possible Scam??? (12/7/2006 6:09:45 PM)

We were able to confirm that somone using improper credit card information is contacting pallet companies trying to operate a shipping cost scam. We are not sure the proper identity since so many fake names have been used. In at least one case, the information used was stolen. This could be true for more.

Be leery of anyone calling from out of state wanting to pay via credit card. The Profile will have more on this in the next issue. If you don't get the Profile, call Jeff at 800-805-0263 to find out how you can.

If you suspect suspicious activity, call the fraud department for your credit card company. We need to report as much of this as possible because we can all do our part to stop identity theft.

Hi Pallet Boarders,

I just got a call from a Mini Blind Company that was contacted by the "good" Reverend. It seems like maybe the scam artist has gone to another industry. But just in case he hasn't, stay on your guard.

A number of the cards used were stolen Capital One accounts. If you get contacted, report any card number or other info to the appropriate credit card company. If the number starts with 5291, it is a Captial One card.

Interstate fraud and stolen identities are usually policed by the Federal Trade Commission.

You could file a complaint with the FTC by calling the FTC's toll-free Identity Theft Hotline at (877) ID-THEFT or (877) 438-4338.

You can also visit www.fraud.org for more information. Or you could file a report with your local police department.

Merry Christmas,
Chaille Brindley of the PE Staff

cfs -> RE: Possible Scam??? (1/10/2007 3:41:01 PM)

We are a Filter company not a Pallet company so apparently Kelvin has changed industries.

There was a company called Pistel & Company that wanted to order $3600 in air filters with an additional $3490 in freight from our company. Rev. Kelvin Pistel gave me four different Credit Card numbers and asked me to use them to pay for the filters on two of them and the shipping cost on the other two. One of the credit cards was denied but the rest went through. He then told me these were to be shipped to Accra, Ghana and I was to contact a freight company called Arinas Shipping and they stated they had sub companies all around the U.S. Mr. Emmanuel Tetteh from the Arinas Shipping Company said the shipping had to be paid by Western Union before they could go pick it up. He also stated I had to email him with the Western Union Money Transfer receipt information that showed the senders full name, MTCN control number along with the secret question and answer that we give them. Then they would be give a tracking number for the shipment. I was becoming more and more skeptical about this entire order, my boss called the credit card company about the four different credit cards and they told him that one of them was being investigated for fraud already. We then decided not to deal with Kelvin Pistel. When he called us back the owner told him that we could not deliver the filters to any place other then the bill to address on the credit card, and he then rudely hung up on the owner.
Just thought you'd like to know.

woodbutcher -> RE: Possible Scam??? (1/16/2007 10:19:20 AM)

One of these artistscontacted us. THANK YOU BOARD MEMBERS FOR POSTING ABOUT THEM.
After contacting the bank that issued the card they informed us it was a scam.  These guys prey apon the small companies.
No one seems to care about catching these guys as long as they fly under the radar. I suspect that because the sting is only for a few thousand dollars,it is not considered worth it to go to the effort to catch these guys.   so like the drug runner that was shot and then released while the law enforcement officer was chargedfor shooting him. crime does pay.

so now in our industry it is SELLER BEWARE

When discusing this with a friend in another line of work he asked,if I still had the emails? my response was ofcourse. He stated that he would like to read them for educational perposes. I also thought there might be some people on the pallet board who are interested in exactly how these clowns opperate. If so please email me and I will send the files direct rather than clutering the board with them. Sean
