pallet jack -> RE: latest rumors (4/15/2008 10:54:54 PM)

I'm stunned, no one is commenting on the latest Wal-Mart / Chep faceoff?

Pallet jack,
Since you are in the "know" why dont you just fill us in.

YensidJDG -> RE: latest rumors (4/16/2008 1:46:29 PM)

I personally like that Wal-Mart is going to charge CHEP to collect CHEP pallets from each individual Wal-Mart store.  I think this move, along with charging for sorting and storage, will greatly affect/help the monopoly lawsuit.

Makes you wonder if the hire of a former Director from CHEP to Propak helped Propak's cause as well for the West Coast?  Will they (Wal-Mart) try and convince their shippers to reduce the amount of blue wood coming in to their DC's and use more white pallets, thus shrinking the monopoly?  Sounds to me that several changes are coming still, and the players are trying to figure their place at the table.

I think Propak's increased role was bolstered by their longstanding presence within quite a few Wal-Mart DC's, not through a new hire.  Wal-Mart was already aware of Propak's abilities despite CHEP's past meddling in DC operations.

Thoughtful -> RE: latest rumors (4/18/2008 7:16:42 PM)

A FORCED disclosure to the market by Brambles about talks with a key customer sparked panic selling of the stock yesterday, at one stage wiping $2.5 billion from its market capitalisation.
The world's largest pallet supplier said it was compelled to tell investors about the confidential talks with Wal-Mart, after a leak from a US pallet trade association.
The affect of the news on an already skittish market was brutal, with Brambles shares slumping almost 18 per cent in early trade to a low of $8.25. The scrip recovered some ground to close 10 per cent, or $1.03, weaker at $9.

(a newspaper quotation).

What a leak can do.

palletvatoloco -> RE: latest rumors (4/19/2008 4:38:42 PM)

Real winner here is not Propak they lost sites because of Chep. All are going to IFCO Systems.

Big Dog -> RE: latest rumors (4/21/2008 9:58:52 AM)

What Wal Mart did was cut out the middle man.  Propak was doing the West Coast locations anyway, now doing them direct.  The west coast was most profitable due to the locations and demand.  The big winner, was IFCO as you mentioned.  The Propak employees will now have to decide if they want to work for IFCO when the transition takes place on May 5th.  The big winner as also Propak.  Hire a manager who knew the pricing between Wal Mart, Propak, and CHEP.

White Pallet Guy -> RE: latest rumors (4/22/2008 9:37:40 AM)

It seems to me that Wally World is waking up to the reality that blue and red pallets come with a hidden cost - less white cores to sell to pay for its pallet program. The devil is always in the details.

I agree that IFCO seems to be the big winner. Why the hell has Wal-Mart hooked its wagon to IFCO when its senior managers are still being investigated for immigration crimes? Didn't Lee Scott learn anything from the cleaning contracter fiasco a few years ago? - WPG

nailhead -> RE: latest rumors (4/22/2008 9:46:43 AM)

Does anyone know what effect Wal Mart's new direction will have on white wood coming out of Sam's clubs? I would assume the same middle man pricing scheme is in place when Chep sells Sam's wood. I also heard that Wal Mart has stated it will not pay for the return of blue wood, charge Chep to handle blues, blue wood storage fees, and will not be responsible for losses? Brambles has stated that Wal MArt is only about 5% total profit for 2007, maybe this will become a cost center for Chep?

Music to my ears...

Sincerely Interested -> RE: latest rumors (4/24/2008 7:37:22 AM)

T, what happened...cold feet?

Thoughtful -> RE: latest rumors (4/24/2008 8:07:37 AM)

Not really.  I just figure my comments were a bit searching or too wide open and others familiar with more detail could comment more effectively.

On your 'music to my ears post' I had a laugh, knowing why, well I think I know why.  So if I ask why it might seem superficial.  But it would be nice if you comment on an alternative solution in context of the situation for others who may not be aware.  Why knot.  Stitch it up.

Cheers

Sincerely Interested -> The Wal*Mart Effect (5/1/2008 4:53:14 PM)

As CHEP looses favor at Wal*Mart 2 things happen...CHEP looks for ways to makeup the loss (raise rates for shippers, get tough with distributors and NPD's on lost and "stolen" pallets, start charging rent to distributors, cut ARP prices, etc)....and Wal*Mart puts pressure on shippers to use #1 GMA's, which of course Wally will not pay for but will sell for a profit.  This changes the ballgame for shippers, who originally reluctantly went with CHEP because Wally said so, now are faced with an even higher cost alternative (buy #1's and give them to Wally).  The fun never ends

What if the shippers had an alternative that would save them money on all non-WallyWorld shipments??  Wal*Mart is typically 25% of a shippers volume...do the math.

We are no.2 pooling company in EU is now the time to enter US market?

Sincerely Interested -> Be Careful! (5/2/2008 10:34:22 AM)

Better take a hard, long look at the market before making this decision.  Send me an e-mail if you want to discuss off-line.

hysch -> RE: latest rumors (5/21/2008 1:17:59 PM)

The last news on Chep/Walmart was April 18th. Has anyone heard anything lately?

Thoughtful -> RE: latest rumors (7/2/2008 5:04:28 PM)

Looks like it is settled.
